First half soccer stats

First Half Soccer Stats

First-half statistics for 166,062 completed matches across 108 competitions, 2012 to 2026: how often a first half produces a goal, how that varies by league and by club, and how much of it is home advantage. Every figure below is counted from finished matches with a posted half-time score.

How often each first-half line lands

The three first-half goal markets, as they have actually settled across every league covered here. Read them as base rates: the share of all matches that cleared each line, before anything is known about the two teams.

Each rate is the match-weighted figure across every covered competition, so a league with ten times the history carries ten times the weight rather than one vote. The step from over 0.5 to over 1.5 is the one worth noticing: first halves that produce a goal at all are common, and first halves that produce two are not.

Read the over 0.5 row the other way and it is the half time 0-0 rate: 30.6% of matches are still goalless at the interval. It is the same count seen from the other side rather than a second measurement, and it is the figure an under 0.5 first-half line is priced against.

First half goals statistics by league

Leagues are the widest source of variation in first-half scoring, ahead of any individual club. Both ends are shown deliberately: a table of only the highest-scoring competitions would read as though first halves are uniformly busy, and the spread is the actual finding.

Scoring rates answer how often the goals come. For which clubs are ahead when they do, the first half league tables score each competition at the interval instead of at full time.

First half goals statistics by team

Club-level first-half records, restricted to teams with at least 150 matches on record. The extremes of any ranked table are where thin samples collect, and a club with sixty matches can top one on noise alone, so the floor here is well above the floor a club page itself needs.

Clubs that score before halftime most often

A different question from the table above: this one counts only the club’s own goals, so a side that scores early and defends well appears here and not there.

Home and away in the first half

Aggregated across every club with a page, weighted by that side’s own match count so a club with a long home record does not lend its sample to the away column. The scored and conceded columns are close to each other’s mirror image, and that is arithmetic rather than a coincidence: within a league, a goal the home side scores is a goal the away side concedes. The row-to-row comparison is the one that carries information.

Home sides score before halftime 48.6% of the time against 40.4% for away sides, a gap of 8.2pp. It is the largest single split on this page and the reason every club page below reports home and away separately rather than as one blended figure.

What is a first-half goal statistic, and what is it not

First-half goals (also written as 1st half goals, or shortened to FHG) are the goals scored by either side in the opening 45 minutes plus stoppage time. Every percentage on this page is a historical frequency counted from completed matches: the share of matches in which something happened, not an estimate of whether it will happen next.

  • A rate is not a forecast. A league that produces a first-half goal in 60% of matches will still be goalless at halftime in two of every five.
  • Sample size decides how much a rate means. Every table here states the matches behind it, and pages are only published once there is enough history to carry a headline percentage.
  • Seasons are pooled. A competition or a club that has changed character recently reads as the average of what it was and what it is.
  • Missing data is left out, never zeroed. A match with no posted half-time score is counted by nobody. Treating it as 0-0 would quietly understate every rate on the page.

Common questions about first-half soccer stats

The same figures as the tables above, in the shape the question usually gets asked. Every answer is counted from completed matches with a posted half-time score.

How often does a soccer match produce a first-half goal?

69.4% of the 166,062 completed matches counted here produced at least one goal before halftime. That is the match-weighted rate across every covered competition, so a league with a long history counts for more than a short one rather than one vote each.

How often is a soccer match 0-0 at halftime?

30.6% of matches reach half time goalless. It is the exact complement of the first-half goal rate, counted from the same matches, and it is the figure an under 0.5 first-half line is priced against.

How many goals are scored in the first half on average?

1.19 goals per match, counting both sides. It is a mean over every match including the goalless ones, so it sits well below the number a typical scoring first half produces.

How often do two or more goals go in before halftime?

33.6% of matches. The step down from the over 0.5 rate is the widest on this page, and it is the reason a first-half over 1.5 line prices so differently from an over 0.5 one.

Which leagues have the most first-half goals?

Esiliiga leads the competitions covered here, with a first-half goal in 81.1% of its matches against 69.4% across every league. League is the widest source of variation in first-half scoring, ahead of any individual club.

Do home teams score more often in the first half?

Yes. Home sides score before halftime in 48.6% of their matches against 40.4% for away sides, and every club page reports the two separately rather than as one blended figure.

Are first-half goal statistics a prediction?

No. Every percentage here is a historical frequency counted from completed matches: the share of matches in which something happened, not an estimate of whether it will happen next. A league that produces a first-half goal in 60% of matches is still goalless at halftime in two of every five.

From statistics to predictions

The pages above are history. The daily board is the other half: it pairs the same kind of first-half form with the model’s first half over 1.5 and over 2.5 percentages for fixtures that have not been played yet, team 1+, 2+ and 3+ first-half goal signals, and expandable last-5 and head-to-head detail on every match card. Read how the model works to see how form feeds the estimates. When the pre-match data is incomplete, the board shows no read rather than inventing one.
